Direct Trade, Not Fairtrade

Why do we use direct trade?

You might wonder - why do we use the Direct Trade sourcing model? Isn't Fairtrade better? Why aren't we Rainforest Alliance Certified? We think all those labels hide a multitude of sins - considering Fairtrade prices often barely cover the cost of coffee production for farmers. Instead, we're all about transparency. That, and good prices for a great product

FARM. PACT. YOU.

That's it. Unlike the usual coffee supply chain, we cut all unnecessary steps. There's no other players - like commodity traders or distributors - getting a piece of the pie. Instead we pay farmers directly, at 25-125% over Fairtrade rates. That means they can grow their farms, improve their quality of life, and keep producing better and better coffee for us.

Quality, Not Charity

We don't pay farmers fairer than Fairtrade rates because we feel sorry for them. It isn't an act of charity. The people we work with are experts in their field. And they deserve to be paid a price that reflects that. Picking cherries at the right ripeness, hand-sorting them to remove defects, closely monitoring fermentation - a lot of work goes into each cup of coffee. That should be recognised

Long-term Relationships

Our work with farmers is business-based, but forged in friendship. We return year after year, giving them the security of a regular source of income. Some farms have even been selling to us since 2014. And that means as we've grown as a business, they've grown too - whether in acreage, quality or processing ability.
