Our story

In 2012, Stephen Rapoport wanted something simple: to brew a great cup of coffee at home. Living in London, he expected that to be easy. It wasn’t – freshly roasted coffee was near impossible to find.

That sunny summer, he founded Pact in his home. Coffee was roasted one day, delivered the next – because there’s nothing quite like waking up to the smell of coffee brewed at its best.

Welcoming Will

Will Corby arrived soon after, bringing years of experience from across the coffee supply chain to join Pact as Head of Coffee.

Stephen and Will shared a clear belief: the best coffee, and the fairest pay, comes from working directly with growers and removing unnecessary steps in the way.

Pact’s direct trade begins

This fresh, direct approach allowed Stephen and Will to form long term, mutually beneficial relationships with growers with the potential to create some of the best coffee in the world.

For Pact customers, this meant better coffee, roasted with care and delivered fresh. For growers, it meant access to the international market and the stability to invest back into their farms.

Building long-term partnerships

We knew that it was through long-term relationships that we could partner with growers that thrive.

In 2014, we began working with Marcus Carvalho. Back then, he was just beginning to grow coffee and looking for a partner who valued quality over quantity.

Today, he is one of Brazil’s most respected growers, and his coffee remains a cornerstone of our menu. It’s a testament to what happens when growers can focus on their craft.

The Pact roastery opens

By late 2014, Pact Coffee had a fully operational roastery in Bermondsey, London, on the site where the Bourbon Cream biscuit was invented – the inspiration behind our bestselling blend, Bourbon Cream Espresso.

The traditional coffee supply chain has nine steps between the grower and the customer. But from that bright, cold December, Pact beans travelled straight from the farm to this roastery.

That transparency ensured growers were paid fairly for exceptional work – and allowed us to bring Pact customers coffee that expressed flavour and skill, just as the grower intended.

As we grew, we relocated our roasting to the rolling Surrey Hills, in 2018. Today, our Haslemere roastery is carbon-neutral (Scopes 1&2), and we are putting plans in place to move towards Net Zero.

Paul joins Pact

In 2017, Paul Turton joined Pact as CEO, expanding our focus to workplaces through Pact Coffee for Business. Today, that side of Pact also supplies cafés, cinemas, hotels, bars, restaurants, and fitness centres across the UK.

After decades in large corporate organisations, Paul joined to work alongside colleagues who cared deeply about how coffee is grown, sourced, and enjoyed. He’s been here ever since.
