About the farmer, Jesus Antonio Apache:

Known playfully as Don Chucho (which translates roughly as ‘Sir Mongrel’), Jesus Antonio Apache demonstrates a serious pedigree when it comes to growing coffee. He learnt everything he knows about the trade from his father, who he has worked with on various farms in the area since the age of 12. These days Don Chucho runs his own farm and hopes that his seven children will follow his example in learning the land and putting their efforts into growing fine quality coffee.

Thanks to various coffee growing qualifications, recognised by the World Coffee Organisation, Jesus is renowned as something of an authority in his coffee-dependant community. But besides growing really good coffee, it’s really important to him that his workers are treated fairly and the environment is treated with respect.

About the farm:

Thanks to help from the Federacion Nacional de Cafeteros, Jesus has been able invest in his farm, making it a shining example in the region. Specifically he’s been working to improve the drying process of this beans to improve their final quality and now uses patios and parabolic dryers. He has also recently been able to invest in an ecologically-friendly mill and a water filtering system, which are his pride and joy.

A quick Q&A with the farmer, Jesus Antonio Apache:

What does coffee mean to you?

It is very important to me. But I couldn’t work my farm alone, so I also believe that workers should be treated equally, without any discrimination of race or religion. Without the workers on my farm there would be no Buenos Aires.

What is it about your farm that makes you most proud?

The high quality of our coffee is thanks to a team effort. Everyone who works here understands that they are helping to produce a product that’s going to be enjoyed by other humans, and so they have to be very caring and attentive. I think you can taste how much care goes into each cup of our coffee.
