Our Head of coffee
“This coffee has a bitterness beyond what you would normally associate with coffee. It’s actually more in line with what you would taste in high quality dark chocolate. This bitterness is balanced beautifully though with the coffee’s mild, orange citrus acidity and caster sugar-like sweetness. There are fantastic lingering flavours of cherry and dark chocolate that really round this off to be something special.”
El Moral was bought by Trinidad de Jesús Orellana in 1997. Initially, he had a general idea that the property, which is located in Panilla in San Juan, would be used for farming high quality coffee. In just one year, his passion for coffee grew and by 1998 14 hectares of land were covered in different coffee varieties.
Despite the farm falling victim to the usual hardships faced by coffee growers (unpredictable climate and economic downturn), the farm succeeded in growing incredible quality beans. By 2009, the El Moral had grown its reputation considerably.
In July 2014, Trinidad de Jesús Orellana died; however, under his son’s care the farm lives on, and continues to produce the excellent quality coffee.
“In 2012 we competed in the Cup of Excellence and made it to the international round with our Catuai coffee lot.”
