Our Head of coffee
“The creamy milk chocolate flavours are really complemented by distinct almond and juicy raisin flavours. Its creamy mouthfeel and very light citrusy lemon acidity mean that it works really well with milky coffees. It ends up tasting like a sweet milky, hot chocolate.”
Our espresso is actually made up of coffee from two different producers: Planalto Estate and Finca La Esperanza.
For the past 25 years the Planalto Estate has been growing speciality coffees in the highlands of the Nova Rezende, in the south of Mina Gerais in Brazil. The generous space (it’s more than 900 hectares in size), combined with the 3600 foot altitude and the surrounding natural forest, contribute to the farm’s unique microclimate - which is perfect for growing high-quality coffee.
The farm is managed by Sergio Mantovaninni who, together with his wife Mariza, inherited the farm from Mariza’s father.
The story of La Esperanza plantation dates back more than 50 years. Back then Don Eleodoro would walk for days to buy and sell coffee cherries. Once he realised there was a viable business in selling coffee cherries he bought La Esperanza farm. That was in 1953.
Don Eleodoro is now in his 90s and cares for the farm with help of his son Aurelio. Both Eleodoro and Aurelio have participated in the top 10 of the Cup of Excellence competition over the last few years, so they’re clearly doing something right. Coffee grown on La Esperanza boasts a consistently high quality on the field and in the cup and Eleodoro and Aurelio’s expertise is demonstrated in the diversity of profiles they produce.
